Doug Patrick
Also known as: Douglas.
Height: 6’4”.
Weight: 250 lbs.
Eyes: Green.
Hair: Red dreadlocks.
Age: 50s.
First appearance: Doug’s first mention is in Adrian’s journal in Book #1. His first appearance is in the same chapter when Adrian comes from his tent after having sex with Tonya. Doug is the guard on that area. He doesn’t realize it then, but he’s already protecting the boss.
Memorable quote: “We lie. We’ll tell them it’s for the camp’s protection.”
Family: Adopted sons: Roy and Romeo.
Home: Idaho.
Occupation: Retired Army Sergeant.
Safe Haven Status: Adored member of camp, Eagle trainer.
Descendant Status: Normal.
Relationship Status: Was dating Peggy.
Death: Doug died in Book #12, when the radiation sickness claimed so many lives. He had diabetes and hid it from everyone. That condition, and his lack of self-care, allowed the radiation sickness to defeat his weakened immune system. He ascended to the weigh station and has been in several scenes since then. So, in a way, he isn’t really gone.
Notes: Doug joined the service to avoid becoming a potato farmer like the rest of his family. He resented people all of his childhood, but especially his parents for their unwillingness to change. Tormented by the other kids, and by uncaring adults, for his poverty, his size, and his vivid coloring, Doug escaped in the only way he thought was available. He joined the Army.
Once there, he found a way of life that he could believe in, and an ability to provide for himself that didn’t include farming. Doug never returned home.
After being injured during an attack on the area he was guarding, Doug was forced to retire and quickly began to sink into depression; he only had a limp and a tattered green jacket to remind him of the life where he’d been happy.
Joining Safe Haven changed that for him. All Doug wanted was to serve the greater good and he did that. He’s still doing that now, even after his death.
