Angela drew in a deeper breath. “The new magic rules will be posted after we’re done here. You’re not going to like some of them. I didn’t make these rules, but I do insist that we follow them until the council decides on Adrian’s petition.”
More brooding spread through the crowd. They were pissed that both Marc and Adrian had challenged her.
Adrian stood from his seat between Bret and Conner. “When will the council be making that choice?”
“In about a week. I’m waiting until after our company leaves for that one.”
Adrian wanted to argue, but he also knew she had a reason for waiting. She just hadn’t shared that reason with him.
“You are out on bail right now, Mr. Mitchel.” Angela used the sternest voice she could manage while feeling so weak. “Do I need to threaten you to get you to wait until we decide this matter?”
“No.” Adrian was reminded of his family council. He refused to replay the meeting where his mother’s killers had been sentenced. He still didn’t feel like he’d received justice for that awful crime. Tracking the two people responsible would become a goal if Angela ever made him leave this island for good. And South America isn’t that far from here. I would still be close to her.
Angela was too tired to be getting anyone’s thoughts right now. “We’ll need your help while Tilly’s here. You know her better than we do.”
“Just let me know what you want and I’ll handle it.” Adrian wasn’t pleased with Tilly. Coming here uninvited was a bad idea and she should know that. He planned to make it clear that she needed to apologize, but he didn’t believe there would be trouble. Tilly wasn’t that type.
Angela glanced at the front row, where the kids were coloring, dozing, or shifting impatiently. Most of the crowd was doing the same, though small groups had been leaving since casting their votes. “We’ll start counting now.”
The crowd was relieved. They were all ready to be out of here so they could gossip about everything they’d learned.
Gus and Ed moved the heavy locked box to the table, both grunting. They didn’t feel well at all.
Angela got Ed’s attention. “Stop by Amanda’s cabin before you go to bed.”
Ed pouted at what he was sure was a matchmaking attempt. “Why?”
“Because I told you to.”
Ed shrugged. “Whatever.” He immediately forgot the order. He had no intention of starting something with Amanda that they wouldn’t be allowed to finish. My dreams are full of a future that can never exist.
Gus unlocked the box; the two weary men carefully dumped the ballots out on the table for the council to start counting.
“One for Marc.” Grant marked it on his sheet while Isabel and Jennifer did the same so they would have three counts to be sure the results were accurate.
“One for Marc.” Tonya marked it on her sheet.
Frowns became darker at Marc getting the first two votes.
Morgan collected each ballot, marked the person’s name off of his list and then slid the counted ballot back into the box. When all of the votes were tallied, a note would be added with today’s date, location, and a few other details. Then it would be locked again and stored. As far as Morgan knew, they still had the locked boxes from every vote that had taken place in Safe Haven. It’s our history. It matters.
Tonya picked up another ballot; the crowd listened eagerly to find out who their leader would be.
